A new brand identity for Copper Beech Press | Have your say!

Goodness it’s been a looong time since I’ve written one of these sorts of posts. I’m mid-way through the design of my book (more on that later this week, I promise) and took a little time out to work on the brand identity for my publishing imprint: Copper Beech Press. I’m self-publishing my book but that doesn’t mean it won’t be polished and professional to the core. I’ve hired a top editor and have shortlisted some incredible projects to feature and I need a brand identity that does my serious intentions justice.

Copper Beech press has already published my first book, Exhibit, and I hope that my next book will be the first of many illustrated, coffee table style books so I wanted something simple and smart.

Isn’t it amazing what a good break and a bit of time and space can do for your creativity? Before Christmas I was paralysed by insecurity and indecision. I questioned every single design decision and the thought of designing the logo for the book cover and the publishing imprint was terrifying to say the least. I guess that’s what happens when you have several hundred submissions from top designers to do justice!

Anyway, with a clear head and serious inspiration I’ve pulled these logos together this afternoon and I’d love your thoughts. Which do you like best? When I had the brand styling company I’d always ask my blog readers to vote on their favourite concept and so I thought it would be fun to do the same for this logo. I have my favourite, but I’d love to know yours.

Wouldn’t these look just gorgeous foil blocked onto either some white or purple card? I am very tempted to get some made up, I have to say. A little like these beauties!

Hi Fiona
I didn’t want to be anonymous but I am not a wordpress user either.
I love the beech leaf look the best. The beech leaf is so recognisable as beech and one of my favourite leaves so I am probably quite biased! The gold one says it all, really. The tree silhouette looked a little like a blob until I looked more closely and not as delicate as the leaf shape.
Hope this helps and good luck with the decision making. Its hard to edit your own stuff!

Thanks so much Dianna, I really appreciate you taking the trouble to leave your thoughts. The leaf is my favourite too! And I too am a real sucker for the tree. I grew up near a beech wood so have lots of happy memories in that beautiful, vibrant forest.

Hi! I like the leaf of concept 2 – very graceful- and the font in concept 3…sorry to confuse you! I like the lowercase and simplicity of concept 3, but not with the dark silhouette which is not easily recognisable as a beech tree…love your blog x

Hi Fiona,
So you just came up with them in the afternoon? Gosh, I wish I knew how to do this. They are all great but I agree the the leave is the most representative. I do love font of concept 1 though which might be a nice contrast to the delicate leave. Oh and the embossed foil is pretty darn fabulous. Have a lovely week.
Best,
Corinne
